so this weekend i go to my cousin's very controversial wedding in an episcopalian church (it was his financee's idea, he assured us!). The church was in NYC and it was cool, pretty and all, and the services were alot like a mass, but with this big long musical intermission thing in the middle that Catholics would have filled up with holy water sprinklin' and kneelin' and standin' and other catholic-y things. The priest was a woman! It was cool.
But
There was no mojo. Like candle magic type mojo, or old Polish ladies prayers attracting spirits-type mojo. You know what I mean? Is there mojo in Catholic churches? Am I nuts?

Re: no mojo
Thu, May 5, 2005 - 1:45 PMThis could be part of the reason I opted for a very ceremonial form of Japanese Buddhism - lots and lots of mojo.
But I hasten to add that in all seriousness, it was not the primary attraction as that would be extremely trivial and beside the point. Still, it is nice to have lots of "smells and bells" as some people have put it.

Mon, May 9, 2005 - 12:24 AMAgreed. "Smells and bells" is nice. I think I need that stuff to keep my attention and remind me that i'm doing something "otherworldly" or else i will get bored and distracted......I would find it terribly difficult to be in a Protestant church with no ornamentation and some guy just reading out of the bible for hours. I find the bible is soooooo boring.

Re: no mojo
Mon, May 9, 2005 - 10:49 AMone of my favourite big heart memoriez frum highskool & college/monastery iz of servin az thurifer @mass talk about mojo i alwayz felt & still do that everyone shud have to do altar duty bkuz just sittin bak & watchin cant b enuf...u kno...the whole trip of the relik in the altar...the tabernakle...the monstrance...or...this izza memory i cant shake...during lent when the statues wer veiled...the heat frum the candles beneath them would cause the "shrouds" to billow slightly...b4 i wuz old enuf to grasp the science of heat rising i just knew they wer alive (& of course they r)...
i have to mention too...the furst tyme i ever attendid mass wer a woman priest served the liturgy i almost passedout...i wuz in grace cathedral & ther wer about 7 of us who attendid daily mornin mass...i knew women priests existid but i had never seen one...it wuz @the communion rail wen she served me the cup...i had this huge flash...omigawd she bleeds!...since then i have not been able to go to communion without that awareness in my heart...it really altered the validity of the old male dominated priesthood 4me... -

Re: no mojo
Tue, May 10, 2005 - 1:05 AMSay what? A woman priest ! How can this be? Yes, that would be cool, drinking "the blood of chirst" from one who bleeds! We did not have that experience during our visit to Episcopalian-landia because they filled up time with music instead of ceremonial things.
I like the statues story. I remember the month of May, binging and arranging fresh flowers at the feet of the virgin's statue. That was so cool! And yes, you could sometimes, if you looked quick enough, catch the statue's eyes moving. (kind of). Never had the altar boy's experience, but yes, that sounds like the way to go to get the "full effect". -

Re: no mojo
Fri, May 13, 2005 - 10:09 PMI guess they were after some mojo, too.....Maybe I should check out Rev Lauren. You think she's still there? Of course, the Rev. Cecil Williams at Glide Methodist is a wonderful sermon-giver, way better than any Catholic priest I've encountered. The music rocks there, too. What's missing in mojo is more than made up for in "good vibes" at Glide.

Re: no mojo
Sat, October 28, 2006 - 3:52 PMBy the time I was 17, I was exposed to PaganCatholics. I deliberately did Adult Initiation at 24 to fulfill the need for a personal magical initiation. The Lord and Lady are eminantly ..THERE! Of course we've got our mojo workin'! I'm probably avoiding 'confession' to delay initiating what would likely result in something close to excommunication in our current clime....'course I know a half-dozen folks in my parish (a lefty bunch in Tacoma who pray "Our Father and Mother..") who would have to 'get in line'--lay ministry, included.. -

Re: no mojo
Thu, November 2, 2006 - 9:09 PMone of the things i miss about church is the mojo. tho, it does depend on the parish: east coast definitely having more mojo that west coast. but there are some parishes on the west coast that have it to ;-) -

Re: no mojo
Fri, November 3, 2006 - 6:37 AM..er.."say wha?" Feelin' the need to 'represent', here! On the LEFT COAST(lol), there's a mini cathedral in North Seattle, near the UW,: Blessed Sacrament, just off I-5. Run by Dominicans who live well, do rite rigorously; and not beyond sunrise latin masses each Sunday..cuz who's gonna stop 'em?! I was a cantor for a few great months in '84. Trust me, Magic filled the air at all times. You could practically feel my patron saint, Albertus Magnus, cruising the upper loft. Left coast, y'all!

Re: no mojo
Sat, January 27, 2007 - 7:42 PMBeing a Catholic who was married to a "Charismatic Christian", snake handlers and toungue speakers all.
I think that the "Mojo" that the Catholic church is implied as having comes from many sources. Most recently, from Hollywood...
You never see a Baptist successfully committing an Exorcism in Movies.
Also, The Catholic church having a verifyable history that goes back to the establishment of the Protestant faiths...and so on.
Therefore, all Protestants instinctively know that their brand of Christianity sprang from the Catholic church...
We all know about that.
The idea of change, i.e. Young minds, fresh ideas and all." are good.
However, over the course of time, these ideas of change became something less intelligent, and more tribal, or territorial.
People always want to draw lines between themselves to separate one from another...
In groups, or as individuals they always want to be able to say, "I am better than...
(fill in the blank),
and then have someone to agree with them.
It is one of many things that are at the core of the human soul, that desire to be dominant, better than, and so on.
I know I sound like one of those "Peace, Love, and Cash for all" types, but hey this is just my very humble oppinion.
Thanx.
